President Serzh Sargsyan's visit to UK

President Serzh Sargsyan visits London

The President of Armenia was received at the Buckingham Palace by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Issues related to the prospect of development of the Armenian-British relations, the process of Armenia’s integration in the European structures, Armenia's relation with the European Union, as well as issues pertinent to the Armenian-Turkish relations were discussed during the meeting.

Serzh Sargsyan and David Miliband discussed also issues pertinent to regional security, the Armenia-Turkey process of normalization, and the Nagorno Karabakh peace process. David Miliband welcomed efforts of the Armenian President aimed at the normalization of relations with Turkey,noted that the UK supports the process and is interested in strengthened peace and stability in the South Caucasus region.

In Windsor Palace, the President of Armenia met with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. They discussed charity projects to be implemented both in Armenia and the UK. President Sargsyan attended the joint opening reception for the “Yerevan, My Love” and Dumfries House projects initiated by Prince Charles and the former Prime Minister of Armenia Armen Sarkissian, followed by a concert with the participation of the world-famous performers. Armenian part of the project, “Yerevan, My Love” envisages the reconstruction of four buildings of historic and architectural value in the centre of the capital, which will serve as social activities centrse for vulnerable groups and gifted children under the auspices of the Holy See of Saint Etchmiadzin. The reception hosted by Prince Charles was also attended by many Armenians who had specially arrived at Windsor Castle from different countries for the occasion.

Serzh Sargsyan also held a meeting with the Armenian businessmen and renowned public figures, who have arrived in London on the occasion of the Armenian President’s visit. President Sargsyan hailed their role in promoting Armenia’s and Artsakh’s economic advancement and in strengthening Diaspora’s relations with Homeland, as well as their continuing work aimed at the preservation of the Armenian identity in Diaspora. “I am confident that by joining our efforts, we will be able to solve all the existing issues and move forward toward the implementation of our national goals. I have no doubt that time will come, when Armenia’s national flag - the tricolor - will bring as much as joy and pride to the Armenians all over the world as the symbol of Mountain Ararat,” the President of Armenia said.

In the framework of the visit to the Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the President of Armenia delivered a speech at the Chatham House, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, on the issues related to regional security, in which he reflected on the process of normalization of the Armenian-Turkish relations, the NK conflict, main issues of the regional agenda, and answered questions from the audience. During the visit, the President of Armenia participated in the opening of the exhibition of the world-famous Armenian-American artist Archile Gorky in Tate Modern Museum in London. President Sargsyan toured the exhibition and observed the collection of the renowned Armenian artist. A formal dinner that followed the opening ceremony was attended by the President of Armenia, the Catholicos of All Armenians, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Tate Gallery, former CEO of British Petroleum Lord Browne, representatives of the Armenian community of Great Britain and many friends of Tates.

Miliband, MP,the UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs . Armenian-British bilateral relations, as well as regional security issues were discussed at the meeting. Serzh Sargsyan noted that Armenia attaches great importance to further deepening of the political dialogue with the United Kingdom and enhancement of economic relations and development of cooperation in different areas. The parties concurred that Eastern Partnership initiative provides good opportunities for cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats in many areas.
