Ambassador Gabrielyan speaks at the Oxford Summit of Leaders

15 March, 2010

Ambassador Gabrielyan spoke of the relations between Armenia and the EU from the very first stages of their establishment immediately Armenia re-gained independence, to the European Neighbourhood Policy and to the Eastern Partnership.

The Ambassador stated that Armenia is looking forward to signing with the EU an Association Agreement which will outline cooperation in such spheres as economic integration, movement and energy and others. He mentioned the importance of closer economic integration of partner countries, their closer political association, enabling access into each other’s markets. The signing of Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreementand was mentioned as a good prerequisite for the latter objective.

Ambassador Gabrielyan informed the participants of the steps Armenia's Government is taking to meet these goals. He also spoke of  the high importance for Armenia of the visa facilitation process with the EU countries: " Promotion of people-to-people contacts is the best way to establish and develop real partnership among the EU member states and the partner countries. We should take practical steps in order to implement the provisions of the Prague declaration, which inter alia states that “Supporting mobility of citizens and visa liberalization in a secure environment is an
important aspect of the Eastern Partnership”.

Armenia's Ambassador stated again that the Eastern Partnership Initiative is an important and welcome development in Armenia’s relations with the EU and that Armenia attaches great importance to further enhancing of ties with EU and a to closer, deeper integration
within the European family. He said that Armenians have always felt to be bearers of European values and view Europe as where their aspirations lie.
