Holocaust Memorial Day event in Derby

28 January, 2019

On the 28th of January, the Derby City Council hosted the Holocaust Memorial Day  reception, which was attended by members of the Council, diplomats, representatives of different communities and academic circles. The Mayor of the City of Derby, Councilor Mike Carr delivered his remarks and invited Ms. Hayarpi Drmeyan, Armenia’s Consul, to take the floor. Speaking about the tragic consequences of the Armenian Genocide, Holocaust and crimes against humanity, she noted the importance of condemnation and bringing their perpetrators to justice. Talking about the prevention of future genocides, Ms. Drmeyan placed importance on awareness-raising, education and concerted efforts in fighting xenophobia, hatred and racism.

She expressed gratitude to the Derby City Council for passing the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide on 21st of November 2018. She underlined that by voting for this resolution the Council not only contributed to the restoration of justice, but also to the peace and security in the region. On behalf of the Armenian Embassy she handed to the Mayor the book ‘YERGIR’ by Hrayr Hawk Khatcherian.
