The Opening Ceremony of the Plaque in Wales Dedicated to the Genocide Victims

The opening ceremony of the plaque dedicated to the Genocide victims took place on 9^th of May in Gwynedd, North of Wales.

Dewi Owen, the Councillor opened the ceremony with a welcoming speech at the Gwynedd Council. He also read out the message from the Armenian Ambassador Dr Armen Sarkissian. Then the Primate of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of Great Britain Bishop Vahan Hovhannesian and the Primate of St David Church in Wales Patrick Thomas carried out a mass in Armenian and Welsh, dedicating it to the memory of the Genocide victims.

In 2004 the Council of Gwynedd unanimously voted in favour of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. With the efforts of the Armenian community of Wales an agreement was reached to place a plaque in the memory of the Armenian Genocide victims.

On the same day a Spring Remembrance concert was organised at a prestigious London Purcell Room to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The concert included works by Armenian composers Komitas and Kanachyan, as well as pieces by Mozart, Shostakovich and Chaikovsky.
