Ambassador Varuzhan Nersesyan's meeting with religious leaders.

30 September, 2021

On 30 September, Ambassador Varuzhan Nersesyan met with a number of religious leaders. The meeting was organized by Bishop Hovakim Manukyan, the Primate of the Armenian Diocese of the United Kingdom Ireland.

The representatives of the Anglican, Coptic Orthodox, Eastern, Greek Orthodox, Assyrian Orthodox Churches were present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the Ambassador presented the situation in the region as a result of last year's Azerbaijani-Turkish aggression against Artsakh. In particular, the Ambassador stressed the fact that a year after the war, many Armenian prisoners of war are still in Baku prisons, whom the Azerbaijani side refuses to return, despite the obligation taken by the sides under the tripartite statement and the fact that the Armenian side has returned all prisoners of war. Varuzhan Nersesyan highlighted the support of the religious leaders to the solution of this exclusively humanitarian issue.

The Ambassador also spoke about the danger of destruction of the Armenian historical and cultural heritage in the territories under the control of Azerbaijan. Varuzhan Nersesyan stressed that there is already a lot of evidence that the Azerbaijani side is destroying and desecrating our churches, khachkars, graves, and other monuments, and this fact has been covered by a number of international, including British media. In this context, Varuzhan Nersesyan presented the example of Nakhichevan, where the Azerbaijani authorities consistently pursued a policy of ethnic cleansing and destruction of several thousand medieval khachkars, churches, and gravestones were destroyed by the Azerbaijani army.

The meeting also touched upon possible cooperation in a number of directions.
